The baker begins by taking a layer of heart-shaped vanilla cake, covering it with buttercream, and then topping it with another layer of cake. She then covers all the sides with buttercream and smoothens it out. Next, using a deep round cutter, she takes a round portion out from the centre of the cake. Taking a small bowl, she mixes water, corn flour, and red food dye and puts the liquid in a plastic bag. She added that some people also use a balloon instead. She places this plastic bag in the hole in the cake. Next, she covers the entire top layer of the cake with buttercream, smoothens it out, and decorates the borders. Final touch - writing Blank Space in white on top of the cake. Now, all you need to do is make a big cut in the center of the cake like Taylor!

5 Easy Ways To Store Half-Cut Fruits And Vegetables
No household in this world ends up using all of their produce at once. There is always some vegetable or fruit left in the end. Cutting and using fruits and vegetables in portion sizes is a great way to run a kitchen efficiently. This results in lesser wastage, and you will always save time in preparing last-minute dinners or lunch boxes. However, once cut, fruits and vegetables tend to spoil quickly, even if they are placed in a refrigerator. Are you someone who is struggling with the same problem? Then this article is just for you! Read on to learn 5 easy ways to store half-cut fruits and vegetables to ensure they remain fresh for a long time!

Here Are 5 Easy Ways to Store Half-Cut Fruits and Vegetables:1. Refrigerator in ContainersOne of the best ways to store half-cut fruits and vegetables is by storing them in airtight containers in the refrigerator. You can also put them in resealable plastic bags and refrigerate them. This helps prevent exposure to air, which can cause them to spoil and rot faster. Make sure to remove as much air as possible from the container or bag before refrigerating the fruits and vegetables.
2. Use Plastic Wrap or Aluminum FoilSo what if you don t have airtight containers? You can easily keep your cut fruits and vegetables fresh for longer using plastic wrap or aluminium foil. Just keep your cut fruits and vegetables separately in bowls and ensure that the wrap or foil is tightly sealed around the edges. This helps create a barrier against air and moisture, keeping them fresh for longer.
3. Use Citrus JuiceFruits like apples, pears, bananas, guavas, etc., tend to get brown when exposed to air. To tackle this, you can dab a little bit of lemon, lime, orange, or any kind of citrus juice on the cut surfaces. The acidity of the citrus juice can keep your fruits and vegetables fresh for a long time since it prevents browning and oxidation. After brushing the fruits with citrus juice, store them in an airtight container or cover them with plastic wrap.
4. Store in WaterAs unusual as it sounds, some fruits and vegetables like carrots and apples can be stored in water to keep them fresh for a long time. All you have to do is place the cut side down in a container filled with cold water and store it in the refrigerator. Make sure to change the water every day.
5. Wrap in a Damp Paper TowelAnother easy way to prolong the freshness of your half-cut fruits and vegetables is by storing them in damp paper towels before refrigeration. The moisture from the towels helps prevent wilting and drying out. You can refrigerate them as they are or place the wrapped produce in airtight containers for extra freshness.

Do The Mangoes You Eat Contain Carbide? 4 Easy Tips To Find Out
Just when you feel the scorching heat of summer is getting unbearable, a soothing glass of mango drink brings a brief respite. In fact, most of you will agree that the sweet and juicy mangoes are one of the very few things people enjoy about the season. Hence, we try to sneak the fruit into our summer diet in every possible way. As per y20India.in, there are over 1500 types of mangoes across the world, each having its unique taste, texture, and aroma. In fact, in India, you will find fruit shops selling more than six to eight different varieties of mangoes in each region. While we strongly recommend you try every variety of mango you find, all you need to consider is if the fruit is naturally ripened.
Organic Vs Artificially Ripened Mangoes: What Is The Difference? To put it simply, naturally ripened mangoes are the ones that are plucked and sold after they mature. On the other hand, artificially ripened ones use chemicals for premature growth, taste, and texture. According to Ashwin Bhadri, CEO at Equinox Labs, Artificial ripening of mangoes is on the rise across India. It is majorly because of the imbalance between the supply of the product in the market and the rising demand of the customers.

How Are Mangoes Ripened Using Chemicals? What Is Calcium Carbide? You will often find elders at home asking if the mangoes they are buying have carbide. So, what is carbide? Carbide, or calcium carbide, is a chemical used to ripen mangoes artificially. Ashwin Bhadri states that pouches of calcium carbide are placed with mangoes, which once come in contact with moisture, produce acetylene gas. The effect of this gas is similar to ethylene - the compound that naturally ripens a fruit, he adds.
A study in the journal Analytical Methods weighs in, The usage of calcium carbide for mango ripening results in serious health issues like neurological disorders, ulcers, hypoxia, memory loss, and more. Identification of artificially ripened mangoes and quantification of carbide in such fruits help in the prevention of related health problems. In fact, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) prohibits the use of the chemical for artificial ripening, considering the health problems they pose.

How To Identify Mangoes Ripened With Calcium Carbide: 4 Tips To Determine Chemicals In MangoesAccording to the website alphonsomango.in, there are a few simple tricks to find out if the mangoes are ripened with chemicals or not. Let s take you through.
1. The look test:If the ripened mangoes look unnaturally uniform and have no fruit flies or insects around, then it might be due to the strong smell of chemicals in the fruits.
2. The water test:When artificially ripened, the mangoes will float on water. So put the mangoes in a bucket of water after buying, to check if they are organic or not.
3. The taste test:Artificially ripened mangoes will taste less juicy and have a lighter weight, in comparison to the organic ones.
4. The matchstick test:While it is recommended to conduct this test with utmost safety, you can light a matchstick and bring it near a mango. If the fruit catches fire or sparkles, then understand it is ripened using calcium carbide.
How To Remove Carbide From Mangoes At Home? The easiest and most effective method is to wash it thoroughly under running water and soak the fruit in a vinegar-water solution for around 15 minutes. An article on alphonsomango.in also states that you can use baking soda and water to soak the mangoes for at least 15 minutes and wash well to remove the chemical residue.
So, what are you waiting for? Get hold of your favourite mangoes and enjoy them without any worry. Happy summer, everyone!

I Ate My Way Through World s Longest Lunch And Brunch In Melbourne And This Happened
Forget Coachella, forget Burning Man - the real party for foodies this year went down in Melbourne over one epic weekend. Fresh off a plane from the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, I m still buzzing (pun intended) from a truly epic culinary adventure. This wasn t your average restaurant hopping - I went on a two-day food coma through the World s Longest Lunch and the World s Longest Brunch, and let me tell you, it was a marathon, not a sprint, for the senses.
World s Longest Lunch: A Melbourne Masterclass with Andrew McConnellFirst up, the World s Longest Lunch, a 3.5-hour event headlined by Melbourne culinary royalty, Andrew McConnell. He helms a constellation of Melbourne s hippest restaurants (Cumulus Inc. and the buzzy new Gimlet) and brought his signature style - equal parts art, design, and top-notch produce - to the table. And what a table it was! Set under the Melbourne sky, surrounded by fellow food pilgrims, the atmosphere crackled with anticipation.
The menu? Some of Melbourne s finest. Think melt-in-your-mouth local seafood, vibrant seasonal vegetables, and all presented with McConnell s signature understated elegance. It wasn t just about the food, though. It was about the experience: the clinking of glasses, the animated conversations, the shared joy of being part of something extraordinary.
Day two brought a whole new flavour profile - a vibrant exploration of modern Indian cuisine at the World s Longest Brunch. This brand new event showcased three rising stars of the Indian food scene in Australia, each course a revelation.
We started with a bang with Harry Mangat s chaat - a textural explosion of local snapper, tangy tamarind, and the comforting crunch of papdi crackers. Mischa Tropp followed with a gutsy, soulful chicken curry gravy poured over a fluffy ros omelette - a taste of his soon-to-open Fitzroy eatery, Toddy Shop.
But the real showstopper was the dessert. Enter Via Laundry s Helly Raichura, a name synonymous with Melbourne s new wave of Indian fine dining, closed out the brunch with a showstopping falooda. The classic Mughlai sweet got a local twist with rosella jelly, fragrant Geraldton wax, and fragrant layers of custard. It was a perfect ending to a culinary journey that challenged preconceptions and left us all wanting more.
It was during a fascinating chat with Raichura that I learned of her restaurant, Enter Via Laundry, and its mission to introduce Australians to the diverse regional cuisines of India. Her passion for showcasing regional Indian cuisine and her dedication to using local Australian produce shone through in her conversation. She explained the creative process behind the falooda, initially considering a different dessert before settling on the lesser-known, yet perfect-for-summer option. For her, it was about introducing a delicious dish to a wider audience while still utilising traditional Indian techniques.
The Verdict: A Must-Do For Foodie TravellersMelbourne s World s Longest Lunch and Brunch were more than just meals; they were cultural experiences. They were a chance to connect with fellow food enthusiasts, to celebrate the incredible talent of Australian chefs, and to be surprised and delighted by innovative culinary creations.
So, if you re looking for an adventure that goes beyond the plate, book your ticket to Melbourne next year and get ready to experience food like never before. Just remember, wear stretchy pants - you re going to need them!

No Tandoor? No Problem! 5 Tips For Restaurant-Quality Garlic Naan At Home
If there is one bread that has no haters, it s garlic naan! Crunchy, moist, and so flavorful, this flatbread tastes perfect with all types of curries and gravies. The best part about this flatbread is that you don t need a tandoor to cook some up for your friends and family; you can easily whip this up on your tawa! But, the trick to making restaurant-style garlic naan at home is not the major steps but acing the minute details in the smaller ones. Want to know how to make perfect garlic naan on a tawa at home? Then this is the right article for you! Read on to know 5 tips to make perfect garlic naan on a tawa at home!
Also Read: Diabetes Diet: How To Make Diabetic-Friendly Garlic Naan At Home (Recipe Inside)
Here Are 5 Tips To Make Perfect Garlic Naan At Home1. Master the DoughGreat garlic naan starts with the right, well-prepared dough. Make a dough using all-purpose flour, yogurt, a pinch of salt, and yeast in a bowl. Yogurt is important as it adds slight tanginess and softness to naan. Knead the dough until it is soft and elastic and let it rest for at least two hours. Better, if you cover it with a damp cloth. The resting period will allow the gluten to relax, and you will get softer and more flavorful naan in the end.
2. Get the Tawa Temperature RightSince having a tandoor at home seems impossible (unless you have an electric tandoor), a tawa is a great option to make soft and flavorful naans at home. Heat your tawa over medium heat until it s hot but not smoking. You can easily test the temperature of your tawa by sprinkling a few drops of water on the surface - if it sizzles and evaporates quickly, then it s ready. Otherwise, if the tawa is too hot or cold, this could result in unevenly cooked naan.
3. Perfect the Rolling TechniquePerfecting the dough is the first step but if you can roll it right, then it won t make your garlic naan eating experience 10/10. Divide the rested dough into equal-sized portions and roll out each portion into a smooth ball. Grease your hands a little with oil if needed. Then lightly flour your work surface and roll out each ball into a circular shape. Make sure the naan is about 1/4 inch thick and not less. This would ensure that your rolled dough does not stick to the tawa and you get pillowy naans. At this point, sprinkle some chopped garlic, coriander leaves, and kalonji (nigella seeds) on top of the rolled dough.
4. Cooking MethodOnce your rolled dough is prepared, place it gently onto the hot tawa. Cook for around a minute or until bubbles start to form on the surface. Another way to ensure that the naan s base is cooked is by noticing if it has developed brown and black spots. Flip the naan using tongs and cook the other side for a minute until it s slightly charred. You must also press down the naan with the spatula gently to help puff up the naan.
5. Garlic Butter FinishOnce the naan is cooked as per your desired levels, transfer it to a plate immediately and brush it with a mixture of butter and minced garlic. This would add extra flavour to the garlic naan and keep it moist and aromatic!

6 Festive Dishes To Rustle Up On Ram Navami
No festival or religious occasion in India is complete without a lavish food spread, although the latter demands a certain degree of austerity. On Ram Navami, an important day in the Hindu calendar which marks the birth of Lord Ram, some devotees prefer to observe a nirahar (no food) or nirjal (no water) fast, others opt for satvik bhojan or simple, vegetarian meals. On the occasion, many people also feed nine pre-pubescent girls a sumptuous fare of vrat food in a ritual known as kanjak or kanya puja. The usual dishes on the Navami menu include poori, kala chana and sooji ka halwa among others. Let s take a look at some of the most popular ones:

I Tried A Week-Long Navratri Fasting For The First Time And Here Are My Two Cents
Finding myself placed in the category of people who live to eat and not eat to live , I somewhat surprised myself when I decided to observe fasting this Chaitra Navratri 2024. Call it fate or coincidence, the Navratri arrived just around the time I was constantly failing to go on a little detox and improve my digestion. In an Instagram post, Ayurvedic doctor Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya explains that fasting gives that much-needed rest to your digestive system. Just the way we need sleep every night to function optimally every day, our gut needs fasting every once in a while to function optimally.
Seizing the perfect opportunity when thousands of people will be fasting as well, I jumped on the bandwagon and decided to take on fasting one day at a time, and see how things fall, or rise, hopefully.
The health benefits of fasting have been shared by several other experts. Previously on Instagram, celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar talked about how Navratri meals, if followed in the right pattern, can empower women with nutrients that can make them physically stronger and also create a hormonal balance.
The first day of fasting is easy for most of us. You get to eat vrat-friendly foods that you probably have not had for months -- sabudana kheer, makhana chaat, vrat wale aloo and so on. While the delicious vrat foods make it easier, the initial 2-3 days can be hard for your body to adjust to. I experienced bloating and discomfort, after which I realised I was eating too much potatoes and revamped my diet.
That s the first positive change I noticed, fasting helped me be constantly aware of what I eat, when I eat and by how much I eat - a consciousness I was previously lacking. I was no longer eating just cause and started developing a clearer awareness of my hunger cues.

One of the biggest internal battles while fasting is channelling your inner self-control. I was fasting solely on my own will with no external factor, so it was a test of my choice and actions while passing by that momos stall around my office, while sitting next to my friend eating noodles and slurping cold drinks at a party, or while resisting the urge to rip into a packet of biscuits when late-night cravings struck at 2 am. Power of food, am I right?
Moving to the brighter side, fasting helped me shed a little weight daily, and when that scale tipped lower (since after forever), it was one of the biggest motivating factors to keep going. In just one week, I lost a little more than 1 kg, and I am fascinated to think of the progress if I keep following a similar dietary pattern in the future. I owe it to early or small dinners, drinking plenty of water, eating more fruits, eating only when hungry, avoiding packaged foods and eating homecooked vrat food, and getting some workout or movement whenever possible.

I had heard my share of tumse na ho payega [you won t be able to do it] at the beginning of this Navratri and as I ate my first bite of atta (wheat flour) poori with chhole and halwa on the Ashtami, I could taste victory, and of course the fantastic taste that I am yet to decode in the magic of my mother s cooking.
My next challenge is to find more similar healthy ways to continue losing that extra weight without the Navratri diet.

Ram Navami 2024: 3 Classic South Indian Recipes For Ram Navami Celebration
I would always look forward to being in Bengaluru for Ram Navami during my school summer vacation. The festival typically falls on the ninth day of the Chaitra month, as per the Hindu lunisolar calendar, which usually is in the second half of March or early April. Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Ram and is observed across the country with different rituals. Several cities that are mentioned in Ramayana s legends conduct major celebrations. These include locations like Rameswaram and Bhadrachalam in South India. This year will also mark significant celebrations in Ayodhya.
One of the longest-running traditions in Bengaluru is a month-long classical music festival that is organized by the Sree Ramaseva Mandali. This unique festival in the Chamrajpet area in Bengaluru doesn t just bring some of the best exponents of Carnatic music together, but also Hindustani musicians and also includes discourses. A lot of local organizations also organize celebrations and distribute panaka (or panagam in Tamil), a beverage that has been mentioned in ancient texts and that is strongly associated with Ram Navami. Neer more (watery butter milk in Tamil) or Masala Majige (spiced buttermilk in Kannada) are also served during these celebrations across the region. Many homes across South India typically serve panaka, buttermilk and moong dal salad or kosambari. Let s take you through these popular recipes.

Ram Navami-Special Recipe 1: Panaka Or Panagam:This simple summer beverage combines jaggery, dry ginger and cardamom. Some recipes also add a hint of crushed peppercorns or cooking camphor. It s a great summer cooler even beyond Ram Navami and is a fix for dehydration. Thanks to jaggery, the drink comes with natural electrolytes. The quality of jaggery is the key ingredient in this beverage.
Ingredients (For 4 glasses):- Jaggery - 150 gm (avoid using sugar instead of jaggery. You can use palm sugar)
- Water - 600 ml (three glasses)
- Juice of three lemons (medium size)
- Dry ginger powder - half teaspoon (can be substituted with crushed ginger)
- A pinch of cooking camphor (optional)
- Soak jaggery in the water till it melts completely
- Filter the water to remove any particles
- Add the lemon juice
- Add the powders and stir well. Serve at room temperature or serve chilled.

Ram Navami-Special Recipe 2: Cucumber Kosambari:This is one of my go-to salads, an easy yet nutritious one, associated with the Ram Navami celebration. It is also served during other festive occasions and as part of banana leaf wedding meals in some parts of South India. While it s also made with carrot, cucumber s cooling properties (with about 95% water) during the summer make it a preferred vegetable for this delicious salad. You can also substitute the cucumber with grated carrot or asparagus.
Ingredients:- Moong dal: half cup
- Grated or finely chopped cucumber: 1 to 1.5 cups
- Grated coconut: 3 tablespoons (You can skip the coconut if you plan to refrigerate it)
- Chopped coriander leaves: 1/4 cup
- Chopped green chillies: 2 or 3
- Juice of half or 1 lemon
- Asafoetida: 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt: to taste
- Oil (coconut oil works best): half tsp
- Mustard seeds: half tsp
- Red chilli: 1
- Soak moong dal for one hour.
- Drain water completely.
- Chop cucumber finely.
- Stir all ingredients in a bowl with the required amount of salt and lemon juice.
- Temper the mustard and red chilli. Now, add it to the bowl and mix well.
It s a summer cooler in most parts of South India. Neer mor or watery butter milk is also served on Ram Navami. Almost every home has its recipe, but most recipes contain curry leaves, coriander and mustard. Whip the buttermilk and then temper mustard seeds and curry leaves with asafoetida. You can then add chopped green chillies and finely chopped ginger to the buttermilk. Some recipes of the Masala Majige (or spiced buttermilk in Karnataka) also include crushed peppercorns.
